PALM SPRINGS, CA. Elvis and Marilyn. Could there be a better pair that represents American entertainment, celebrity excess, scandal and controversy? Probably, but these are two of the most recognizable in all the world. For a night the pair were together.
Marilyn Monroe, standing 26 feet high, forever posed in her famous Seven Year Itch stance on the corner of North Palm Canyon Drive and Tahquitz Canyon Way. Elvis, portrayed by Scot Bruce, rocked the early years of Elvis’ career from 1954-1968 at the Forever Marilyn Monroe Park.
Palm Springs is, of course, the location of two of Elvis’ famous homes: the Honeymoon Hideaway and the Presley Estate. This Southern California desert oasis is rich with residential architecture, celebrity sightings, and a mecca for retirees and homosexuals. It’s the facade of a beautiful town I would like to call home one day, but until then it’ll be a favored tourist destination for me. A nice spot for a daycation.
This night, sitting under a dark sky shadowing a cool, fall evening, an estimated 1200 people shared the nostalgia. Some sat while others danced. For awhile we were all the same. Just a bunch of fans enjoying an evening with friends, family, and making new friends. Forever Marilyn. Forever Elvis. Forever…whatever. It was great.
